Why This Seat Matters

The Utah House of Representatives shapes the laws that determine how East Sandy and Cottonwood Heights families live — how their taxes are spent, how their schools are funded, how their communities grow, and whether the state’s natural assets are protected for the next generation. House District 42 is a community that cares about fiscal accountability and responsible governance, and the representative who holds this seat makes decisions that touch every household in it. Meet Clint

Clint Okerlund was born in Richfield, served a mission in Argentina, married the love of his life, and built a full life in the blink of an eye. He graduated from BYU in Finance and earned his MBA from the University of Notre Dame. Today, his two oldest children are married students at BYU, his third is serving a mission in Canada, and his youngest is entering his freshman year at Alta High School, where Clint’s wife Megan works in the school counseling center.

Before coming to the legislature, Clint spent 15 years as a corporate and commercial banker at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. In 2019, he stepped out of banking to become Chief Financial Officer at a Sandy biotech company and has since served as a fractional CFO at several other companies. That background gives him something rare in the legislature: a working understanding of how financial decisions at the government level actually land on real businesses and real families.

As a state representative, Clint has put that expertise to work serving on the Revenue & Taxation, Transportation, Education Interim, and Community Development Appropriations committees. He’s been a consistent watchdog for taxpayer dollars and has led efforts on legislation to improve Utah’s air quality and restore water levels in the Great Salt Lake — issues that affect every resident of the Wasatch Front.

 

What He’s Running On

Affordability — Utah’s cost of living is rising faster than most families’ incomes. Clint approaches affordability the way a CFO would: by identifying the policies that drive up costs and cutting them, rather than layering on government solutions that compound the problem. His financial background keeps his focus on outcomes, not appearances.

Housing — Responsible housing policy means expanding supply without sacrificing community character or burdening taxpayers. Clint supports solutions that make it easier to build the homes Utah families need while keeping local governments in the driver’s seat on planning and development decisions.

Managing Growth — East Sandy and Cottonwood Heights are growing, and growth done poorly creates costs that last for generations. Clint is committed to ensuring that infrastructure, services, and community character keep pace with development — and that the financial implications of growth decisions are fully understood before the votes are cast.

Great Salt Lake and Clean Air — A declining Great Salt Lake and poor air quality are not just environmental concerns — they’re public health and economic issues. Clint has actively sponsored water conservation legislation and pushed for meaningful air quality improvements in the legislature, backed by a pragmatic, results-driven approach rather than empty commitments.

 

The Field

Clint Okerlund ran uncontested at the Salt Lake County convention, securing the Republican nomination. He will be on the November 3, 2026 general election ballot. As an incumbent CFO-turned-legislator, he brings a financial rigor and an accountability-first mindset that’s hard to find in any legislative body.
