ABOUT Michael
Mike Smith was born and raised in Utah County. He grew up spending time with his dad hauling hay, chopping wood for winter, raising livestock, shoeing horses, working in the family garden, and doing construction jobs with his father. He has great respect and admiration for his dad who taught him the importance of being honest, straightforward and hard working. His father was taken from him far too early in a car accident. He describes his mother as "an amazing woman" of strength and wisdom. She is one of his greatest supporters. He worked on a local potato farm, learning to apply the work ethic instilled in him by his parents. He attended school in Pleasant Grove and graduated from Pleasant Grove High School in 1989. He spent two years serving his church in Boston, Massachusetts. By far, his greatest accomplishment in life is his family. He is married to Bren Smith. They have five children, two girls and three boys and two grandchildren. He is proud of his Utah County heritage and feels blessed to live in such a beautiful county.
In 1994, Mike began his law enforcement career with the Pleasant Grove Police Department. While employed for PGPD, he was able to serve as a patrol officer, motor officer, detective, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, and in 2012, was appointed as Chief of Police. He served as chief until he ran for Utah County Sheriff in 2018. In August of 2018, Mike was elected as the Utah County Sheriff, where he currently serves. As a sheriff, Mike has actively sought to improve Utah County law enforcement as well as law enforcement throughout the state. Mike has served two terms as the President of the Utah Sheriffs Association.
In 1998, Mike was selected to be a member of the newly formed Utah County Metro SWAT Team. He served 18 years on the SWAT team, receiving promotions to team leader and then to the forward operations commander. From 2006-2012, he served as a reserve deputy for the Utah County Sheriff’s Office. Mike has also served as a member of a joint criminal apprehension team with the U.S. Marshal’s Office.
Mike holds an associate’s degree in Criminal Justice and a bachelor’s degree in Emergency Services Administration - Emergency Management from Utah Valley University. In the summer of 2011, Mike spent three months in Quantico, Virginia, where he attended and graduated from the FBI National Academy.
